Spiral staircases are beautiful to photograph, but they are always crazy-steep with tiny stairs.  They freak me out a bit, especially on the trip down. Visit almost any beach in North Carolina and you'll probably pass a lighthouse or two, and lighthouses have a way of demanding that you climb up for a peek at the awesome view.  And inside every lighthouse you will find a spiral staircase, usually made of metal and/or wood.
